Description

The Prusa XL+ is a large-format CoreXY 3D printer with a massive 360 × 360 × 360 mm build volume, direct-drive Nextruder, automatic Load Cell calibration and a 16-zone segmented heated bed.

Choose from Single Toolhead, Dual Toolhead, or Five Toolhead configurations. Start with one toolhead for large-format printing, choose two for practical multi-material and soluble-support workflows, or equip the XL+ with five independent toolheads for advanced multi-colour and multi-material production with minimal purge waste.

Choose Your Toolhead Configuration

Configuration Best For Capability
Single Toolhead Large-format single-material printing One independent Nextruder
Dual Toolhead Soluble supports, two materials or two nozzle sizes Two independent Nextruders
Five Toolhead Multi-colour and advanced multi-material production Five independent Nextruders

All three versions use the same XL+ large-format CoreXY platform and 360 × 360 × 360 mm build volume.

Single Toolhead

The Single Toolhead configuration is the most economical entry into the XL+ platform.

It is ideal for users whose main priority is:

  • Large-format parts
  • Engineering prototypes
  • Jigs and fixtures
  • Cosplay and props
  • Batch production
  • Single-material functional components

You still receive the full XL+ platform, including the segmented heatbed, Nextruder, automatic calibration and massive build volume.

Additional toolheads can be added later, so choosing the Single Toolhead version does not limit future expansion.

Dual Toolhead

The Dual Toolhead configuration adds a second independent Nextruder and the XL+ toolchanger system.

This is an excellent configuration for professional users who need more than single-material printing but do not require five colours or materials simultaneously.

Prusa specifically positions the dual-tool XL+ for:

  • Functional parts using soluble supports
  • Break-away support materials
  • Two materials in one print
  • Two colours
  • Two different nozzle sizes
  • Combining rigid and flexible materials

Because each toolhead has its own extruder, hotend and nozzle, material changes do not require repeatedly flushing one filament through another.

For many engineering and prototyping applications, Dual Toolhead is likely the sweet spot.

Five Toolhead

The Five Toolhead configuration unlocks the full capability of the XL+ toolchanger.

Five independent Nextruders can remain loaded and ready, allowing one print to use up to:

  • Five colours
  • Five materials
  • Five different nozzle configurations
  • Or a combination of materials, colours and nozzle sizes

Prusa positions this configuration for multi-material production and colour work, including long unattended jobs with multiple large filament spools.

True Multi-Material Toolchanging

Unlike filament-changing systems that feed several materials through one nozzle, each XL+ toolhead is a complete independent extrusion system with its own:

  • Nextruder
  • Hotend
  • Nozzle
  • Filament

When another material is required, the XL+ parks the current toolhead and picks up another.

This provides several important benefits:

  • Very little purge waste
  • Cleaner colour transitions
  • Reduced cross-contamination
  • Faster material changes
  • Different nozzle sizes in the same job
  • Dedicated abrasive-material nozzles
  • Soluble support materials without excessive flushing

Prusa describes the XL+ as an active toolchanger capable of swapping complete tool types rather than simply changing filament.

Massive 360 × 360 × 360 mm Build Volume

Every XL+ configuration provides the same 360 × 360 × 360 mm print area, giving approximately 46.7 litres of usable build volume.

The large build area is ideal for:

  • Large engineering prototypes
  • Automotive components
  • Manufacturing jigs and fixtures
  • Full-size cosplay parts
  • Architectural models
  • Robotics components
  • Production batches
  • Large functional parts

16-Zone Segmented Heatbed

The XL+ uses a segmented heated bed divided into 16 individually controlled zones.

Instead of heating the entire large build surface unnecessarily, the printer can heat the areas required by the current print.

This helps improve:

  • Heat distribution
  • Energy efficiency
  • Large-part adhesion
  • Temperature consistency

Maximum heatbed temperature is 120°C.

Direct-Drive Nextruder

Each toolhead uses Prusa's Nextruder direct-drive extrusion system.

The Nextruder provides precise filament control for a broad selection of materials, including flexible and engineering filaments.

The quick-change nozzle system also makes it possible to dedicate different toolheads to different nozzle sizes when using the Dual or Five Toolhead versions.

For example:

  • Tool 1 — 0.4 mm general-purpose nozzle
  • Tool 2 — 0.6 mm support or high-flow nozzle
  • Tool 3 — abrasive-resistant nozzle
  • Tool 4 — fine-detail nozzle
  • Tool 5 — another colour or engineering material

Automatic First-Layer Calibration

An integrated Load Cell sensor allows the nozzle itself to probe the build surface.

The printer automatically compensates for the installed print sheet and nozzle configuration without requiring manual Z-offset adjustment.

On multi-tool configurations, the printer also calibrates tool offsets so each nozzle is positioned correctly relative to the others.

Wide Material Compatibility

The open filament system accepts standard 1.75 mm filament without proprietary spool requirements.

Depending on configuration, nozzle and enclosure, the XL+ can print materials including:

  • PLA
  • PETG
  • ASA
  • ABS
  • TPU / Flex
  • PC / Polycarbonate
  • PA / Nylon
  • PVA
  • HIPS
  • PP
  • CPE
  • PVB
  • Carbon-fibre composites

The Dual and Five Toolhead versions add the ability to combine compatible materials within the same print.
