Choosing Nylon Filament for Functional Parts
Nylon, also called polyamide or PA, is used for mechanical prototypes, jigs, gears and other parts where wear resistance and toughness matter. Choose the exact grade for your application: PA6, PA12 and fibre-filled blends have different properties and printing requirements.
Compare the nylon grades
| Grade | Format | Selection note |
|---|---|---|
| PA6 | 1 kg; colour options | Unfilled nylon; careful moisture management is important. |
| PA12 | 1 kg; colour options | Unfilled nylon 12; generally lower moisture uptake than PA6. |
| PA6 Carbon Fibre | 500 g, 800 g, 2 kg; black | Compare the reinforced grade's technical data; use a wear-resistant nozzle. |
| PA6 Glass Fibre | 500 g, 800 g; black | A glass-filled PA6 alternative; use a wear-resistant nozzle. |
| PA12 Carbon Fibre | 10 m sample, 500 g, 800 g; black | A reinforced PA12 option; use a wear-resistant nozzle. |
Listed formats describe the range. See each product's options for current availability.
PA6 or PA12?
PA12 generally absorbs less moisture than PA6. That can help limit changes in dimensions and mechanical properties as humidity changes. It still needs appropriate drying and storage. Compare the exact grade's data with your part's load, temperature and exposure requirements; the PA number alone does not determine which filament is best for the job.
Unfilled, carbon fibre or glass fibre?
Start with unfilled nylon when you want to evaluate the base polymer's properties. Thin sections can flex, while thicker sections behave differently. Fibre-filled formulations can improve dimensional stability, but also change impact behaviour and layer bonding. For a rigid fixture, compare the grades' stiffness data; for a part designed to flex, compare elongation and the demands of repeated bending. Test the intended geometry and print orientation.
Carbon fibre and glass fibre are abrasive. Use a suitable wear-resistant nozzle and follow the filament's minimum nozzle-size recommendation. Check compatibility with your hotend when browsing replacement nozzles.
Dry before printing and protect the spool during use
Moisture can cause bubbling, rough surfaces and inconsistent extrusion. Dry nylon using guidance for the exact formulation and a temperature suitable for its spool. A sealed container with desiccant helps protect dry filament; it does not replace the drying process for a wet spool. For long prints, use a suitable dry feeding arrangement to limit moisture exposure.
Check the printer, build surface and enclosure
Confirm that your hotend and heated bed support the chosen grade's settings. Use a build surface or adhesive intended for that nylon; adhesion to ordinary PEI can be poor. An enclosure can help control warping, particularly for larger parts, while suitable ventilation remains important. Follow the material and printer instructions for your setup.
Check automatic-feeder compatibility separately from printer compatibility. The ability to print a nylon grade does not by itself confirm that your AMS, CFS or other feeding system supports it.
Choose a practical spool size
Match spool size to your expected use and dry-storage capacity. The PA12 Carbon Fibre listing includes a sample option for evaluating the material. PA6 Carbon Fibre includes a 2 kg option for longer jobs; check that your spool holder and dry feeding setup can accommodate it.
