Choosing PETG Filament for Your Project

PETG is a useful choice for brackets, holders, enclosures, organizers and working prototypes. It combines toughness with good layer adhesion and generally offers more heat resistance than standard PLA. The right choice still depends on the part's design and how it will be used.

Choose the appearance you want

Solid colours suit everyday prints, while matte PETG gives a lower-gloss surface. Translucent PETG lets light pass through; wall thickness, colour and print settings affect the result. The Tool Collection offers four workshop-inspired colours. For a selection of neutrals, the Shades Starter 4 Pack includes Black, Grey, Dark Grey and White.

Check the spool size and refill format

Choose both the colour and the format before ordering. Matte PETG has spool and refill options that vary by colour, while the Tool Collection and Translucent PETG listings use 1 kg spools. Set up your printer for the specific PETG

Start with the product's temperature recommendations and a PETG profile for your printer. Use a build surface approved for PETG: it can bond too strongly to smooth PEI, so follow the plate manufacturer's preparation and release-layer instructions. Carbon fibre PETG also requires a suitable wear-resistant nozzle.

Keep PETG dry between prints

Store unused filament sealed with desiccant. Moisture can affect print quality, so dry filament when needed using the product's recommended temperature and time. Check the spool's heat tolerance too. Dry storage helps prevent moisture uptake but does not replace drying wet filament.

Using an automatic filament system?

For Bambu Lab AMS, Creality CFS or another feeder, check the material requirements and spool dimensions for your exact system. Confirm support for carbon fibre blends separately. Large spools may need an external holder rather than fitting inside the feeder.
