Choosing ASA Filament for Your Project

ASA (acrylonitrile styrene acrylate) is a useful choice for printed parts that spend time outdoors. Its UV resistance makes it worth considering for garden accessories, equipment covers, brackets and signs exposed to sunlight. Match the filament's specifications to the part's temperature, load and exposure requirements.

Choose the colour and format

Our standard ASA listing includes Black, Blue, Brown, Green, Grey, Dark Orange, Red, White and Yellow; check the options for current availability. Choose Carbon Fibre ASA for projects that call for its particular material properties, or the 4.5 kg Black spool when you need more filament for a long job or a batch of parts.

ASA or ABS for outdoor parts?

ASA generally offers better UV resistance than ABS filament, making it a useful option when sunlight exposure matters. Consider the complete design too: wall thickness, layer orientation and mounting points affect how a printed part performs in service.

Use a printer set up for ASA

A heated bed and a stable, enclosed print environment help reduce warping and cracking, particularly on larger parts. Provide suitable ventilation while avoiding cold drafts across the print. Follow your printer manufacturer's guidance for enclosure use and ventilation.

Use the recommendations for your chosen ASA formulation and a suitable printer profile. Follow the build plate manufacturer's instructions for preparation and any adhesion or release layer. Check nozzle requirements separately for carbon fibre ASA.

Check the nozzle, spool holder and feeder

Carbon fibre ASA is abrasive and needs a suitable wear-resistant nozzle. Compare its technical data with standard ASA when choosing a material. For AMS, CFS or another automatic feeder, check support for the exact filament and spool format.

The 4.5 kg black spool needs a holder with enough clearance and capacity for its dimensions and weight. Check these before ordering; a separate external holder may be needed.

Store ASA dry between projects

Reseal unused filament with desiccant. If drying is needed, use the filament's recommended time and temperature and check the spool's heat tolerance. Keeping it sealed between prints helps maintain consistent results.
